My home PC shut off and will not come back on.?
I was on my PC and it just went dead. I have an HP Pavilion not more than 3 years old. There is a small green light on the back of the PC that is flashing, but when I press the power button nothing happens.

There was a thunder and lightning storm in my area when I was using the PC. I have the PC and all other equipment plugged into a surge protector. Everything else that is plugged into the surge protector is working but the PC is not. I unplugged the PC from the surge protector and plugged it directly into the wall outlet but it still doesn’t work.
What is that little green flashing light in the back?
Is there ANYTHING I can do to get my PC running again?

Pleeeease help.

If it’s hot out it could have simply overheated. In that case just relax and turn it on in a couple of hours.

it proboly got struck. (i dont think proboly is spelled right!)

srry, call the HP place and maybe you will have to bring it in and they will look at it

You need a new power supply. get something at least 500 watts.

    sounds like its zapped
open the case and see if theres a little LED on the mother board thats lit up, if its plugged in and that lights out then its fried, if it IS lit then start removing components until it turns on, if your lucky youull find the culprit

Well it it plugged in?, I no its a stupid question but it is amazing how many people do that.

Depends where that green light is? Some motherboards have diagnostic lights on them, some PS’s have them too.

But it sounds like the power supply went. It’s not uncommon. You can get a replacement unit. Without seeing your unit in person I would suggest the following specs to look for.

    ATX
    20+4 pin
    SATA Power Connectors

removal and installation are pretty straight forward, 4 screws on the back of the PS (look at the new one to see where they are on the old one) and a bunch of plugs you can’t go wrong installing (as they go in one way).

Get a new power supply, I would recommend you take it to a local repair shop so they can pin point your problem. It will cost from $50 - $120 but will save you a lot of headache!

If NOTHING happens when you push the button, it could be a few things:

Power supply: The power supplies they put in HPs/Dells are notoriously cheap. A good power supply uses a lot of copper, and they are therefore more expensive. (not much.. Pick up a 20-30 dollar rosewill.)

Motherboard: The motherboard could be fried. Perhaps a surge got past your surge protector, or the power supply could have surged. I’ve had a few PSU’s take down a motherboard. Alternatively, the power switch could have come unplugged from the motherboard.

Everything else is low-tech freak of nature type stuff.. The button could be broken, perhaps somthing came unplugged slightly and isn’t contacting anymore.. Lots of things. Check the Power supply(take it to a computer repair shop if you don’t know how. They should do it for free.. Or you can test it yourself (hotwire the green wire to a black wire, and plug it in. (WHILE IT IS NOT PLUGGED INTO ANYTHING ELSE))

    Anyway.. Good luck.

well my first question is.. how are you on the computer if your computer wont turn on??
and lightening storm could have deffinetly altered the power supply in your machine. tht green light in the back is your power supply. its suppose to stay solid green 24 / 7. my recommendations are taking your computer to a service place, tell them you would like them to chekc the power supply on your machine. if they ask why tell them wat you told me.. you were in a lightening storm, computers on, surge protector things, all of tht. they’l probably tell you tht your surge protector was a piece of crap and it might have friend your power supply. thats wat im guessing just on the description of it. soo yea take your desk top to a service place, and have them check the power supply.
the only buying issue is a new power supply and maybe a new surge protector ( a better one).
